Court Sanctions EFCC Over Delays in Emefiele Trial
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting in Maitama, has imposed a N500,000 fine on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over repeated delays in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The sanction followed the Commission’s failure to produce a key prosecution witness, a police officer involved in the investigation, leading to yet another adjournment in the matter. The prosecution attributed the development to administrative hurdles, including procedural requirements from the police hierarchy and the witness’s engagement in a separate court proceeding.
Counsel to the defendant opposed the request for adjournment, drawing attention to the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act which seek to limit unnecessary delays in criminal trials. The defence maintained that the prosecution had exceeded the permissible number of adjournments and argued that such lapses undermine the defendant’s right to a timely trial.
In his ruling, the presiding judge acknowledged the importance of hearing all relevant witnesses but expressed concern over the pattern of delays. While granting the adjournment in the interest of justice, the court imposed a financial penalty on the EFCC as a measure to discourage further disruptions.
The matter has been adjourned to April 27 for continuation of trial.
Emefiele is facing multiple charges, including allegations of abuse of office, fraudulent procurement, and obtaining funds under false pretences. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts and remains on bail pending the conclusion of proceedings.
