Nepal Floods Leave 380 Missing as Death Toll Rises to 22
At least 22 people have died and more than 380 others are missing after flash floods swept through communities near Nepal’s border with China’s Tibet region, triggering a major search and rescue operation.
The disaster struck on Wednesday after a massive flow of mud and rocks reportedly entered a river in the Himalayan border area, causing the water to surge into nearby communities. Videos from the scene showed floodwaters carrying people and debris through affected areas, while homes and other structures were submerged or damaged.
Preliminary figures from the Nepal Tourism Board indicate that 384 people have been reported missing from the affected areas. The missing include 291 foreign nationals, among them tourists from India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia, as well as 93 Nepali nationals.
The scale of the disaster remains unclear as rescue teams continue searching for survivors and authorities assess the damage. Officials have warned that the casualty figure could rise as more information becomes available from the remote and heavily affected areas.
