Nigerian Students Secures Multiple Gold Medals at Global STEM Competition in Rome
Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in international academic competition, with three students earning gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale held in Rome, Italy.

The competition brought together participants from more than 150 countries, who competed in various Mathematics and Science categories. Representing Nigeria across different age groups, the students delivered outstanding performances that placed them among the top global contenders.
The team consisted of Onyedikachi Egejurum, Chimdiebube Onwubiko, and Don Anele Munachimso. Egejurum emerged as the leading performer in the primary Mathematics category, while Munachimso excelled in Science, securing top honours in his category. Onwubiko also earned a gold medal, contributing to Nigeria’s strong overall showing at the event.
The students qualified for the international stage after excelling in a regional mathematics competition in southeastern Nigeria, where they ranked among the highest performers from a large pool of participants. Their participation in the Rome event was facilitated through private sponsorship, which covered their travel and related expenses.
The Olympiad, hosted at a university in Rome, served as a platform for young talents worldwide to showcase their academic abilities. Nigeria’s success at the event has been widely seen as a positive indicator of the country’s potential in global academic competitions.
Observers note that the achievement highlights the importance of sustained investment in education and talent development, particularly as the country seeks to strengthen its presence in international academic arenas.
