President Milei Attacks UN as ‘Useless Organisation’ at General Assembly
Argentine President Javier Milei has launched a sharp attack on the United Nations, describing it as a “useless organisation” during his address to the UN General Assembly in New York.
Milei accused the UN of failing to fulfil its founding mission of promoting collective security and human rights, arguing that it had instead allowed conflict, violence and international terrorism to persist. He also criticised what he described as the organisation’s growing influence over domestic issues.
He said the UN had become an organisation serving “a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats.”
Milei also used the speech to renew Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. He accused the UN of failing to enforce resolutions calling for negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the disputed territory.
“The Malvinas are a national cause,” Milei said, urging Britain to resume negotiations for a peaceful settlement.
The Falklands have remained under British control since 1833, and Argentina’s claim led to a 74-day war with Britain in 1982.
Milei’s remarks come as tensions over the disputed territory have again increased, including over offshore oil exploration. Britain maintains that the Falkland Islanders have the right to determine their own political status, while Argentina rejects that position.
The Argentine president has previously used international forums to criticise multilateral institutions and what he describes as globalist policies.
