President Tinubu Approves Up to 80% Salary Increase for Nigerian Armed Forces
President Bola Tinubu has authorised a significant salary increase for members of Nigeria’s armed forces, with adjustments ranging from 30 to 80 per cent depending on rank.
The decision, announced on August 4, 2026, will take effect from September 1, 2026, and is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the country.
Under the new pay structure, the highest percentage increases will go to junior ranks. Personnel from private to staff sergeant level will receive up to an 80 per cent raise, while those from warrant officer to colonel will see a 50 per cent increase. Senior officers above the rank of colonel, including generals, will receive a 30 per cent adjustment.
The revised salary package will increase the annual wage bill for the armed forces from about ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, reflecting an additional ₦264 billion in government expenditure.
The pay review is part of the federal government’s broader effort to enhance troop welfare and strengthen national security. It comes amid ongoing military operations against banditry, kidnapping and insurgency in various parts of the country.
According to government officials, the salary adjustment is intended to recognise the contributions and sacrifices of military personnel, while also boosting morale and operational effectiveness.
The administration has also reiterated its commitment to modernising the armed forces by investing in equipment, technology and other resources needed to improve performance and ensure the safety of citizens.
