BREAKING: Nigeria’s Ex-Presidential Candidate Leaves Opposition Party, Citing Internal Crisis

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially announced his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pointing to deepening internal crises and what he described as a worsening political environment within the party.

In a statement released Sunday, Obi said his decision was driven by “endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division” within the party, stressing that the situation was distracting from addressing Nigeria’s broader challenges.

He also emphasized that his departure was not due to personal disagreements with party leaders, including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom he said he still respects.

Multiple reports confirm that Obi’s exit follows weeks of tension within the ADC, including leadership disputes and legal battles that have unsettled the party ahead of political realignments linked to the 2027 general elections.

There are also indications that Obi and other key political figures may be considering a new political platform, as consultations continue among opposition groups seeking a more stable coalition.

Obi, however, maintained an optimistic tone, reiterating his belief that “a new Nigeria is possible,” even as he steps away from yet another political platform.
