ECOWAS Commits €269.5m to Guinea’s Roads, Energy and Healthcare

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has committed €269.5 million to three major projects in Guinea, targeting gaps in healthcare, road infrastructure and electricity supply.

The financing, secured through three loan agreements signed in Conakry on September 10, will fund the construction of a regional hospital in Siguiri, the rehabilitation and paving of an 84-kilometre road network, and the development of the Tinkisso 2 Hydropower Project.

The largest allocation, €143.05 million, will go towards the Cissela-Banko-N’Dèma and Banko-Saraya road projects. The improved routes are expected to strengthen transport links and support trade in Upper Guinea, while making movement between communities and commercial centres easier.

Another €65.8 million will finance the Siguiri Regional Hospital, which is expected to expand access to specialised healthcare for more than 1.7 million people. The remaining €60.6 million will support the Tinkisso 2 Hydropower Project, with the development expected to expand renewable electricity access to more than 350,000 people.

The projects form part of Guinea’s wider infrastructure and economic development plans, including the Simandou 2040 programme, which seeks to address infrastructure constraints and improve the country’s productive capacity. The investments are also expected to support job creation and expand access to essential services.

The latest financing highlights the growing role of regional development banks in supporting large-scale infrastructure projects in West Africa, particularly in areas where weak transport networks, limited electricity access and inadequate healthcare continue to constrain economic growth.
