EU Pledges €20 Million in Military Support as Nigeria Awaits 10 Attack Helicopters
The European Union has pledged €20 million in defence assistance to Nigeria’s Armed Forces as the country seeks to strengthen military operations against terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats.

The proposed support under the EU’s European Peace Facility was discussed during a meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, and the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States, Gautier Mignot.
According to a statement from the Defence Ministry, an EU technical delegation is expected to visit Abuja in November to agree on arrangements for delivering the assistance.
Separately, Musa disclosed that Nigeria is expecting 10 attack helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other military equipment to strengthen security operations. The announcement did not establish that these aircraft and drones are part of the EU’s €20 million package.
The discussions come as Nigeria continues to confront persistent insecurity, including attacks on isolated communities and kidnappings along major highways.
The minister also highlighted security concerns around the Lake Chad Basin, where denying armed groups access to hideouts remains a priority for the Multinational Joint Task Force.
The EU’s proposed assistance adds to growing defence cooperation between Nigeria and the bloc, which launched a formal Peace, Security and Defence Dialogue in February 2026.
