Four Arrested as Probe Deepens Into Deaths of 18 Elephants in Kenya
Four people have been arrested in Kenya as authorities investigate the deaths of 18 elephants recorded across the Amboseli ecosystem, with preliminary evidence suggesting that poisoning may have contributed to the fatalities.
The deaths occurred between June 24 and July 24 across several locations, including Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary, Kitenden and Motikanju Kuku Ranch. Kenya Wildlife Service records show that seven of the elephants died inside the national park, while another seven were found at Kimana Sanctuary.
Investigators have recovered several chemicals during a search in Tikondo, Kimana, including substances suspected to be toxic and other unidentified chemicals. Initial laboratory results have raised the possibility of poisoning, although authorities say further scientific tests are required before the cause of death can be conclusively established.
The investigation involves wildlife officials, security agencies and scientific institutions, with authorities working to determine whether the deaths are connected and identify those responsible. The government has also pledged to strengthen surveillance and controls around hazardous substances, warning that anyone found to have deliberately harmed protected wildlife will face prosecution.
