Ghana Keep 2027 World Cup Dream Alive With Comeback Win Over Côte d’Ivoire
Ghana’s Black Queens have kept their hopes of returning to the FIFA Women’s World Cup alive after overturning an early deficit to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the WAFCON qualification play-off in Casablanca on Thursday.
Côte d’Ivoire took control early when Ines Konan converted a fourth-minute penalty, but Ghana gradually grew into the contest after the break. Princess Marfo restored parity in the 59th minute before Josephine Bonsu completed the comeback from the penalty spot 13 minutes later.
The victory earns Ghana a place in the 2027 Women’s World Cup inter-confederation play-offs, giving the team another opportunity to secure qualification for the tournament in Brazil. The Black Queens had missed out on automatic qualification after failing to reach the WAFCON semi-finals.
Ghana’s victory keeps alive their bid to return to the global stage for the first time since their last appearance in 2007, while Côte d’Ivoire’s defeat ends their hopes of making a second World Cup appearance after their debut in 2015.
