Government to Cut Visa Processing Embassies in Africa to 20
The United States plans to significantly reduce the number of embassies and consulates in Africa that process visas, cutting them from nearly 50 locations to just 20 “hub” centres, according to verified reports.

The move, expected to take effect in June 2026, is part of a broader immigration policy shift aimed at tightening visa issuance and strengthening screening procedures.
Under the plan, applicants in countries without designated processing hubs will be required to travel to other nations to complete their visa applications, potentially increasing costs and logistical challenges.
U.S. officials say the decision is intended to improve efficiency, enhance security vetting, and reduce visa overstays.
Despite the reduction, embassies in non-hub countries will continue to provide limited services, including assistance to U.S. citizens and handling of emergency or diplomatic visas.
The development could have significant implications for African applicants, including Nigerians, as access to visa services becomes more centralized across fewer locations.
