Kenya Names New Stadium After Raila Odinga, Sets January Opening With European Football Giants

Kenya is set to open its new 60,000-capacity stadium in Nairobi on January 5, 2027, with President William Ruto announcing plans for Bayern Munich and Ajax to play the inaugural match. The facility, initially known as Talanta Stadium, will be renamed Raila Odinga International Stadium in honour of the late former Kenyan Prime Minister.

The opening fixture is expected to draw international attention to Kenya’s growing sports infrastructure as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Hosting two prominent European clubs is also expected to give the new venue an early international profile.

Bayern Munich, the German Bundesliga club, and Ajax, the Dutch football side, have confirmed their participation in the scheduled match. Ticket sales are expected to begin on November 5, ahead of the January opening.

The stadium’s inauguration represents a significant milestone in Kenya’s preparations for major international football events. Its new name also places the late Odinga’s legacy at the centre of the national sporting project, linking the opening of a major sports facility with a tribute to one of the country’s prominent political figures.
