Kenya on Edge Ahead of Gen Z Protests Marking Anniversary of Past Unrest
Security has been heightened across Kenya as authorities prepare for fresh demonstrations expected to coincide with the anniversary of earlier anti-government protests that resulted in significant casualties.

Thousands of people are anticipated to participate in marches and memorial activities across major cities, including Nairobi, in remembrance of victims of previous unrest largely driven by young citizens.
The protests, which first emerged in 2024, were triggered by public opposition to fiscal measures but quickly evolved into broader expressions of discontent over economic hardship, unemployment, and governance concerns.
Government officials have warned against any actions that could disrupt public order, stating that security personnel will be deployed to ensure safety and protect property. Citizens have also been urged to carry on with normal activities.
Despite the caution, civil society groups and opposition figures have encouraged peaceful participation in commemorative events, including processions and vigils, to honour those who died and to demand accountability.
Previous demonstrations were marked by clashes between protesters and security forces, leading to numerous deaths and injuries, and drawing criticism from local and international rights organisations.
While some policy adjustments followed the initial protests, analysts note that key issues such as the rising cost of living and inequality remain unresolved, contributing to renewed mobilisation efforts.
Recent memorial gatherings organised by religious and community groups have called for justice for victims and restraint from all parties.
The government has also introduced compensation measures for individuals affected by past protest-related violence, though some stakeholders argue that accountability for alleged abuses remains insufficient.
Observers say the upcoming demonstrations will be a critical moment, testing both the government’s approach to public order and citizens’ commitment to peaceful expression.
