African Military Leaders Urged to Strengthen Cooperation Against Security Threats
The Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has stressed the importance of deeper cooperation among African armed forces in tackling terrorism, insurgency and other transnational security threats across the continent.

He made this known during the Third African Land Forces Forum held in Port Harcourt as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026. The gathering brought together military leaders and defence representatives from 17 African countries, reflecting a shared commitment to improving regional security.
Shaibu explained that the forum was designed to promote dialogue, strengthen partnerships and facilitate the exchange of operational knowledge among participating nations. He noted that incorporating the event into the Army Day celebration not only honours the institution’s history but also reinforces collective security efforts within Africa.
Highlighting the evolving nature of security threats, the army chief observed that many challenges now extend beyond national borders, making coordinated responses increasingly necessary. He pointed to Nigeria’s experience in counter-terrorism operations, emphasizing the importance of adaptive strategies, effective use of air support, continuous troop training and sustained regional cooperation.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Multinational Joint Task Force in addressing insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin, noting its role in weakening armed groups and restoring stability in affected areas.
The forum is expected to include exhibitions of military equipment, technological innovations and locally developed defence solutions aimed at enhancing capacity and encouraging knowledge sharing among African militaries.
Shaibu urged participants to engage actively in discussions and collaborative initiatives that would strengthen the continent’s collective security framework. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the forum would contribute to lasting peace and stability across Africa.
