Nigeria Finishes Sixth, Emerges Africa’s Top Performer at 2026 Commonwealth Games
Team Nigeria concluded its campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a sixth-place finish on the overall medals table, emerging as the highest-ranked African nation at the competition.
The contingent secured a total of 24 medals, comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, placing them ahead of other African teams, including South Africa and Kenya. The performance marks Nigeria’s best ranking at the Games in two decades, despite recording a lower overall medal count compared to some previous editions.
Analysts attribute the improved position to a more evenly distributed medal tally among competing nations, which allowed Nigeria’s gold medal count to significantly influence its overall standing. The country also improved on its seventh-place finish at the 2022 edition in Birmingham.
In athletics, Nigeria delivered a strong showing, finishing among the leading nations in the discipline. Athletes contributed multiple podium finishes across track and field events, with standout performances in sprint and relay races, as well as field events. The mixed 4x400m relay team was among the notable highlights of the competition.
However, the team fell short of pre-tournament expectations, having projected a higher number of gold medals before the Games. The absence of certain sports, including wrestling, which has historically contributed significantly to Nigeria’s medal haul, also affected the final tally.
Despite these challenges, officials expressed satisfaction with the overall outcome, citing the team’s consistency and resilience throughout the competition. Preparations are expected to continue with a focus on improving performance in future international events.
Australia finished at the top of the medals table, followed by England and Canada, while India and host nation Scotland completed the top five ahead of Nigeria.
