EU Awards 89 Fully Funded Erasmus Scholarships to Nigerian Students for 2026
The European Union has granted 89 fully funded Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholarships to Nigerian students for the 2026 academic session, reinforcing the country’s standing as the leading beneficiary of the programme in Africa.

The announcement was made during a pre-departure orientation in Abuja for successful candidates preparing to begin postgraduate studies in various European institutions. According to EU officials, a total of 163 Nigerians secured admission into the programme this year, with 89 receiving full sponsorship.
The figures place Nigeria among the top-performing countries globally in Erasmus Mundus admissions, alongside nations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the United States. The number of scholarship recipients also reflects an increase from the previous year, indicating sustained growth in Nigerian participation.
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme is widely regarded as a highly competitive international scholarship scheme. It provides beneficiaries with the opportunity to study in at least two European countries and obtain joint or multiple postgraduate degrees.
EU representatives noted that the initiative underscores ongoing cooperation with Nigeria in expanding access to quality education and strengthening human capital development. They also expressed optimism about improving Nigeria’s global ranking in future admission cycles through continued collaboration with local education authorities.
Officials encouraged the selected students to uphold strong academic and personal standards while abroad, stressing the importance of representing Nigeria positively and applying acquired knowledge to national development upon completion of their studies.
Representatives from Nigeria’s education sector commended the EU for its continued support and urged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity. Some of the students described the scholarship as a platform to gain international exposure, develop new skills and contribute meaningfully to various sectors in Nigeria after their return.
Since Nigeria joined the Erasmus Mundus initiative in 2014, the country has consistently ranked among the top participants worldwide, with the total number of beneficiaries approaching a significant milestone.
