U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert Over Planned Ex-Soldiers’ Pension Protest in Abuja
The U.S. Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert ahead of a planned protest by retired Nigerian military personnel over the non-implementation of pension adjustments linked to salary increases for serving personnel.

The demonstration is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja. The embassy said the protest could lead to traffic congestion and possible road restrictions around Olusegun Obasanjo Way and adjoining routes, while advising U.S. citizens to avoid the area and remain vigilant.
The retirees, under their association, are demanding what they describe as their pension rights, arguing that increases approved for serving military personnel should have corresponding adjustments for pensioners. They are particularly concerned that a new salary increase scheduled to take effect in September could widen disparities between recently retired personnel and those who retired earlier.
The U.S. mission said the protest is expected to be peaceful but warned that large gatherings can become unpredictable, with possible confrontations involving protesters, counter-demonstrators or security personnel. It urged citizens to avoid crowds, monitor local developments, keep a low profile and use alternative routes if necessary.
