Nigerians in Ghana Demand Audit of Funds Allocated to High Commission

Nigerians living in Ghana have called for greater transparency in the management of funds allocated to the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, urging the Federal Government and relevant oversight bodies to account for monies released to the mission.

Nigerians in Ghana Demand Audit of Funds Allocated to High Commission

The demand was contained in a petition dated August 18 and addressed to the Nigerian High Commissioner in Accra, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the leadership of the National Assembly and anti-corruption agencies. The petitioners, representing sections of the Nigerian community in Ghana, particularly requested details of allocations made to the mission under the 2025 Appropriation Act and any subsequent intervention funds meant for consular services and the welfare of Nigerians.

They raised concerns over alleged instances in which Nigerians in Ghana were required to contribute financially towards emergency welfare assistance, repatriation, detention-related matters and other consular needs. According to the group, repeated claims of inadequate funds at the mission have created an additional financial burden for members of the Nigerian community and raised questions about how resources earmarked for such responsibilities are being utilised.

The petitioners called for a town hall meeting with Nigerian community leaders within 30 days, as well as the release of adequate funds to enable the High Commission to fulfil its responsibilities. They also requested a system for regular disclosure and feedback on the use of welfare funds, stressing that greater accountability would help rebuild confidence between Nigerians in Ghana and the diplomatic mission. Copies of the petition were sent to relevant National Assembly committees, NiDCOM, ICPC and EFCC for their attention.
