UAE Suspends Economic Ties With Iran Amid Rising Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The United Arab Emirates has suspended trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran indefinitely, as tensions between the two countries intensify over security incidents in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

UAE Suspends Economic Ties With Iran Amid Rising Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the measure, citing escalating regional tensions and concerns over threats to regional and international peace and security. The suspension will remain in place until further notice, with no timeline provided for its review or possible reversal.

The decision follows a series of disputed security incidents involving the UAE and Iran. Abu Dhabi has accused Iran of attacks on two vessels linked to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company in the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran has denied responsibility. The UAE has also reported detecting two ballistic missiles launched towards its territory, although Iranian authorities have rejected claims that they were responsible.

The latest move marks a significant deterioration in economic relations between the neighbouring countries and could further affect commercial and financial activity linked to the strategically important waterway. The announcement also came as UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held discussions with US President Donald Trump on regional developments, amid continued uncertainty over the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
