Lawyers’ Group Announces Legal Support for Planned Nationwide Protest
A coalition of legal practitioners operating under the Lawyers in Defence of Democracy Initiative has disclosed plans to deploy its members to monitor and provide legal assistance during a nationwide protest scheduled for August 5, 2026. The demonstration, organised by the Take-It-Back Movement, is expected to take place simultaneously across several major cities, with participants gathering at designated locations from the morning hours.

The lawyers’ group made the announcement on August 4, 2026, through a statement issued in Lagos by its public relations officer. According to the organisation, the decision to participate is driven by its mandate to uphold democratic principles and ensure that individuals exercising their right to peaceful assembly are adequately protected under the law. The group indicated that its members will be present at protest venues to observe proceedings, offer legal guidance, and respond to any rights violations that may occur.
The planned protest is intended to draw attention to concerns raised by organisers regarding governance issues, including economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived threats to civil liberties. In preparation for the event, the organisers, through their legal representatives, formally notified the national police authorities, stating that the communication was meant to facilitate security arrangements, traffic control, and the safety of participants and the general public.
The Lawyers in Defence of Democracy Initiative also called on both demonstrators and security personnel to conduct themselves responsibly and within the boundaries of the law to maintain order throughout the exercise. The organisation emphasized that its involvement is aimed at ensuring accountability and safeguarding constitutional rights during the protest.
