Mexico Beat South Africa 2–0 in Tense World Cup Opener
Mexico kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 2–0 victory over South Africa in a fiery Group A encounter at the Estadio Azteca.

The hosts dominated from the start, with Julian Quinones opening the scoring early in the ninth minute after finishing calmly through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Veteran forward Raul Jimenez later doubled the advantage in the second half to secure all three points for Mexico.
South Africa struggled to settle into the match under a hostile atmosphere and were reduced to nine players following two red cards to Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane. The disciplinary setbacks left the African side unable to mount a meaningful comeback.
Mexico’s early breakthrough came after sustained pressure, as the home crowd created an intense environment that unsettled the visitors. Sithole’s error in possession contributed to the opening goal, and his evening worsened when he was sent off shortly after the restart for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Jimenez extended Mexico’s lead in the 67th minute following a well-executed counterattack that exposed South Africa’s defensive gaps. Zwane’s dismissal later in the game further weakened the visitors after a VAR review confirmed a dangerous challenge.
The match ended on a dramatic note when Mexico defender Cesar Montes was also shown a red card in the closing stages for a reckless foul, but the result had already been secured.
