Nathaniel Bassey’s YouTube Channel Passes 1 Billion Views, a First for African Gospel Artist

Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has become the first African gospel artist to pass one billion views on YouTube, according to Nigerian media reports of his channel’s statistics.

]

His official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, had more than 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of Sunday, 1 November 2026. It was created in March 2011. The figure is the channel’s total across all its videos, not a single clip.

The channel has grown through his gospel releases, worship sessions and online prayer meetings, including songs such as “Imela”, “Onise Iyanu”, “Olowogbogboro” and “You Are God”. The milestone coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, the monthly online worship programme he founded in 2017, with midnight sessions of praise and prayer that draw participants from around the world.

Bassey was already among the most-streamed Nigerian acts on YouTube Music in the first quarter of 2025, with 52.8 million streams, according to Debut Hub data.

Some fans have suggested he should monetise the audience, but Bassey has consistently said the Hallelujah Challenge is for worship, prayer and spiritual commitment rather than revenue.
