Opposition Parties Move to Present Single Presidential Candidate Ahead of 2027 Election
Opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, in what they describe as a joint effort to strengthen their political influence and challenge the ruling party.

The decision was reached at a high level political gathering held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where leaders from several opposition parties met to discuss the future of Nigeria’s democracy and their role in the next general election.
According to the resolutions from the meeting, the opposition parties said the move is aimed at addressing what they described as growing concerns over the state of governance and the need to preserve a competitive multi party system in the country.
The meeting brought together key political figures from across different parties, reflecting a rare moment of cooperation among groups that often operate independently. Leaders at the gathering expressed concern over what they see as increasing political dominance by the ruling party and the need to form a united front.
A major highlight of the meeting was the agreement, in principle, to work towards selecting one consensus presidential candidate who will represent the coalition of opposition parties in the 2027 election. However, the process for selecting the candidate has not yet been clearly defined.
The opposition also raised concerns about the credibility and independence of the electoral process, calling for stronger institutions and reforms that would guarantee fairness in future elections.
While the agreement signals a new phase of political alignment ahead of 2027, questions remain over how long the unity will hold, especially given the differing interests and ambitions within the coalition.
