Over $6 Billion in Gold Recorded Through Official Channels in First Half of 2026
Burkina Faso reported more than $6 billion worth of gold passing through official channels during the first six months of 2026, reflecting ongoing efforts by authorities to strengthen oversight and formalise the mining sector.
Data released during a mid-year review by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries showed that industrial mining operations produced approximately 26 tonnes of gold within the period. In addition, the state-owned National Precious Substances Company (SONASP) acquired around 29 tonnes from artisanal and semi-mechanised miners.
Combined, these figures indicate that over 55 tonnes of gold were processed through formal systems. Based on prevailing international prices, the total value of this output is estimated at roughly $6 billion, highlighting both strong global demand for gold and the country’s position as a major producer.
The government has been implementing reforms aimed at increasing transparency and reducing illicit trade in the sector. By purchasing gold from small-scale miners through SONASP, authorities are seeking to improve traceability, boost official reserves and ensure greater revenue capture for the state.
Additional measures include the establishment of new mining cooperatives, the designation of specific corridors for artisanal mining and intensified enforcement actions against illegal gold trading networks. These steps are part of a broader policy framework designed to expand state participation in the mining industry under the revised Mining Code.
Officials also reported progress in strengthening supporting infrastructure, particularly in the energy sector, with new power generation projects completed or nearing completion. These developments are intended to support mining operations and enhance overall economic resilience.
The government views the mining and energy sectors as critical to advancing economic independence, especially amid ongoing security and economic challenges in the Sahel region.
