Government Declares End of Ebola Outbreak After 42-Day Monitoring Period
Uganda has officially declared the end of its recent Ebola outbreak, according to Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi. The announcement follows the successful completion of a 42-day surveillance period during which no new infections were recorded.
The monitoring phase began after the last locally transmitted case was discharged in mid-June 2026. Health authorities maintained heightened nationwide surveillance throughout this period to ensure the virus had been fully contained.
In total, the outbreak affected 20 individuals. Eighteen patients recovered and were discharged, while two fatalities were reported. The deaths involved individuals from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The final Ebola patient in the country, also a Congolese national, was released from care later in June.
Under guidelines set by the World Health Organization, a country can declare an Ebola outbreak over only after 42 consecutive days without a new case following the recovery or death of the last confirmed patient. Uganda’s completion of this requirement confirms that the outbreak has been successfully contained.
