Rwanda’s Record Coffee Price Highlights Africa’s Widening Market Divide
Rwanda’s specialty coffee sector has recorded a major price milestone, with a premium lot selling for $452 per kilogram at the Best of Rwanda 2026 online auction held on October 21.

Produced by K-Organics Ltd, the coffee emerged from a national competition that attracted 320 samples, with 31 lots eventually sold to international buyers. The sale underscores the growing value of high-quality, carefully processed African coffee in the global specialty market.
However, the record price contrasts sharply with earnings elsewhere on the continent. Kenya’s 2026/27 coffee auction season opened at an average of about $5.86 per kilogram of clean coffee, while Côte d’Ivoire reduced its guaranteed farmgate price for the new season to approximately $2.30 per kilogram, down from $2.92.
The figures reveal the substantial differences in how coffee is valued across Africa, depending on quality, market channels and pricing systems. While exceptional specialty lots can attract premium buyers, ordinary auction sales and government-regulated farmgate prices operate under different market conditions.
Rwanda’s achievement highlights the commercial potential of specialty coffee, while the contrasting prices in Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire point to the broader challenge of improving returns for coffee producers across the continent.
