Police Recover 28 Human Skulls, Bones from Suspected Criminal Camps in Abia
The Abia State Police Command has recovered 28 human skulls and other bones from suspected criminal camps in forests in the Isuochi area of Umunneochi Local Government Area.
The remains were discovered during intelligence-led raids on suspected criminal hideouts in forests around Umuaku and Nneato communities on Sunday, September 27. Police said the occupants fled when tactical operatives arrived.
Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka said the remains were suspected to belong to victims of kidnapping, although their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths have yet to be established.
Some of the remains were reportedly decomposed. The operation involved personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Unit, Rapid Response Squad and Isuochi Divisional Police Station.
The police said the suspected criminals escaped before the operation, and no arrests had been made in connection with the discovery. Investigations and surveillance of the area are continuing as authorities work to identify the remains and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The operation is part of the Abia police command’s wider campaign to dismantle criminal hideouts and tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
The Umunneochi area has previously been the focus of security operations targeting suspected kidnappers, with authorities reporting the discovery of human remains during earlier raids.
