Sanwo-Olu Announces Arrival of 24-Car Trains to Boost Lagos Red Line

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the arrival of new 24-car train sets to expand capacity on the city’s Red Line rail system, in a move aimed at easing commuting challenges in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

The Lagos State Government confirmed on Thursday that the additional rolling stock will strengthen operations on the Lagos Red Line, improving service frequency and reducing passenger waiting times.

“We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet,” Sanwo-Olu said, noting that the upgrade is part of broader efforts to build a more efficient and reliable mass transit system.

The new delivery is expected to significantly boost the line’s capacity as demand for rail transport rises in the densely populated city. Authorities say the trains will help scale up daily trips and improve overall commuter experience along the corridor.

The Red Line, inaugurated in 2024, currently runs between Agbado and Oyingbo, linking major districts such as Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin and Yaba. It forms a critical part of the state’s wider rail master plan designed to reduce road congestion and improve urban mobility.

Transport officials project that, at full capacity, the line could move up to 500,000 passengers daily, positioning it as a key intervention in tackling Lagos’ long-standing traffic challenges.

The latest expansion underscores Lagos’ push to develop an integrated, multi-modal transport network, with future plans to connect the Red Line to other rail corridors and major hubs, including the airport.
