Tanzania Lifts Special Visa Clearance Requirement for Nigerians
Tanzania has removed Nigeria from its list of countries subject to special visa clearance, allowing Nigerian travellers to apply for visas through the country’s standard procedures.
The change took effect immediately following amendments published in Tanzania’s Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026, according to the country’s Immigration Services Department.
Previously, Nigerians were classified under Tanzania’s “referred visa” category, which required applicants to obtain additional clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration before travelling. Applicants were also advised to apply at least two months before their intended travel dates.
With Nigeria removed from the category, Nigerian citizens can now use Tanzania’s regular visa application process, including the official online immigration portal and designated entry points.
Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department said Nigerian applicants will now follow the same standard procedures applicable to ordinary visa applicants. The ordinary single-entry visa generally costs $50, while Nigerian citizens are listed as eligible for a one-year multiple-entry visa costing $100.
The referred visa requirement remains in place for nationals of several other countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Chad, Ethiopia, Iran, Mali, Niger, Pakistan, Senegal, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Syria and Yemen.
The change removes an additional administrative step that had previously applied to Nigerian travellers seeking entry into Tanzania.
