Separatists Declares May 30 Biafra Remembrance Day, Urges Sit-at-Home
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared May 30, 2026, as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, calling for a sit-at-home across the southeastern region and among supporters globally.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, the group said the directive is to honor men and women who died during the Nigerian Civil War, describing the date as a “sacred day of remembrance” for fallen heroes and heroines.
IPOB urged residents to suspend all forms of economic and social activities, emphasizing that the day should be observed with reflection, mourning, and respect. The group stressed that the sit-at-home is an annual memorial rather than a political action.
The May 30 observance marks the anniversary of the 1967 declaration of Biafra, which triggered a three-year civil war that resulted in widespread casualties and humanitarian crises.
While the directive has historically seen varying levels of compliance across southeastern Nigeria, authorities have often opposed such orders, citing their impact on economic activities and public order. Security agencies typically increase surveillance in the region during the period.
Further developments are expected as the date approaches and government agencies outline security and public safety measures.
