Trump Promises $5,000 to US Adults if Republicans Win Midterms

U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed his promise to give every adult American citizen $5,000 if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.

Trump Promises $5,000 to US Adults if Republicans Win Midterms

Trump first announced the proposed payment, which he calls the “Trump Dividend,” at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas in September. On Saturday, October 3, he repeated the pledge, saying he looked forward to signing the checks if Republicans win the House of Representatives and Senate.

Trump has suggested the payments could be supported by revenue from tariffs and what he describes as strong economic performance under his administration. However, the proposal could cost more than $1 trillion, depending on the number of eligible recipients.

The proposal would also face significant legal and political hurdles. Congressional approval would likely be required because federal spending is controlled by Congress. Analysts have questioned whether existing tariff revenues could cover the payments, while economists have warned that injecting such a large amount of money into the economy could increase inflation and add to the federal deficit.

Although the Republican National Committee has encouraged candidates to support Trump’s economic agenda, many Republican candidates in competitive races have largely avoided making the $5,000 payment a central campaign issue.

With the midterms approaching, Trump’s pledge puts direct cash assistance at the centre of the Republican campaign pitch. Whether it becomes an actual government programme, however, would depend on congressional action, funding and the details of how the proposed dividend would be implemented.
