UEFA Expresses Loss of Confidence in FIFA Leadership Over Governance Concerns
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has declared a loss of confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino, citing concerns over governance and transparency within world football’s governing body.
The development follows controversy surrounding a proposed initiative to establish a new entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise, which was intended to manage competition revenues and allow limited external investment. Although the plan was presented as a means of boosting financial returns for member associations, it was met with strong resistance from several regional football bodies.
UEFA criticised the manner in which the proposal was handled, raising issues about transparency and adherence to established governance principles. The European body argued that the approach undermined earlier commitments to accountability and proper management of FIFA’s financial resources.
Amid mounting opposition, FIFA withdrew the proposal, a move that has been welcomed by football stakeholders as a step toward safeguarding the integrity of the sport. However, UEFA maintained that restoring confidence in FIFA’s leadership would require broader reforms.
The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) also supported the decision to abandon the proposal, highlighting concerns over the lack of consultation and due process in advancing the plan. The body emphasised the need for collective decision-making and stronger governance standards in managing global football assets.
The episode has intensified scrutiny of FIFA’s leadership and reignited calls for greater transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement in the administration of the sport worldwide.
