U.S. Reiterates Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara
The United States has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, maintaining its longstanding support for Rabat’s autonomy proposal as the preferred path to resolving the territorial dispute.

The position was conveyed in a message from U.S. President Donald Trump to King Mohammed VI during celebrations marking Morocco’s Throne Day. Washington emphasised that Morocco’s autonomy plan remains the most viable framework for achieving a lasting political solution to the decades-old conflict.
U.S. authorities also highlighted Morocco’s role as a strategic partner in promoting regional stability, particularly in efforts to counter extremism and strengthen security cooperation across North Africa and the Sahel. The message underscored continued collaboration between both countries in addressing shared security concerns.
In addition to political and security ties, the United States signalled plans to expand economic cooperation with Morocco. Areas identified for deeper engagement include energy development, artificial intelligence, defence and critical mineral resources, with a focus on supporting growth and investment opportunities.
The Western Sahara dispute has persisted since Spain’s withdrawal from the territory in 1975. Morocco administers most of the region and considers it part of its sovereign territory, while the Polisario Front continues to advocate for independence.
The United Nations remains involved in efforts to broker a negotiated settlement acceptable to all parties, maintaining a peacekeeping presence in the region. However, Washington’s latest position reinforces its continued backing of Morocco’s approach as the basis for resolving the conflict.
