US Warns About Security, Cancels Visa Appointments in Abuja

The US Embassy in Abuja has canceled all visa appointments, citing what it says are rising security concerns. People with scheduled appointments are advised to check their emails for new dates. Visa services continue at the US Consulate in Lagos.
The US government has allowed non-essential staff and their families to leave Abuja, pointing to risks from crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Americans are advised to be careful if traveling to Nigeria.
Northern states including Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and northern Adamawa are considered very risky by the US. Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara are also flagged for crime and unrest.
Emergency services remain available for US citizens in need.
