9-year-old Nigerian girl turns TikTok into a mathematics classroom
While many children her age are using social media primarily for entertainment, nine-year-old Charlotte Muritala from Offa, Kwara State, is using TikTok to teach mathematics to other children.
A JSS2 student, Charlotte developed a passion for mathematics when she was about five. Today, she uses a whiteboard, marker and smartphone to explain topics such as algebra, fractions, cross multiplication and lowest common multiples in short, step-by-step lessons shared online.
Charlotte says her approach to difficult mathematics problems is simple: break them into smaller parts and solve them step by step. She describes mathematics as something she genuinely enjoys rather than a difficult school subject.
Her mother has also helped create a platform for her to share what she knows with other children. Charlotte says she feels happy and proud to be able to teach others.
Her mathematics teacher describes her as an exceptional student, while her growing online presence has attracted attention from parents and young learners.
Beyond the viral videos, Charlotte’s story offers an interesting picture of how social media can be transformed from a source of entertainment into an informal classroom — and how a child’s passion, when encouraged, can become a tool for inspiring other children.
