Abuja to Host International Polo Qualifiers as Nigeria Seeks Global Sporting Spotlight
Abuja will host the World Polo Championship qualifiers from November 9 to 16, following approval by the National Sports Commission (NSC), in a development expected to boost Nigeria’s international sporting profile and create economic opportunities. The tournament, organised by the Nigeria Polo Association, will take place at the Guards Polo Club, with India, Iran, Pakistan and host nation Nigeria scheduled to compete.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko approved the hosting request on Monday after meeting with officials of the Nigeria Polo Association in Abuja. He said the commission would explore available support to ensure a successful tournament, noting that international sporting events could stimulate economic activity, create employment opportunities and promote Nigeria’s image abroad.
Nigeria Polo Association Chairman Suleman Abubakar said the Federation of International Polo had awarded Nigeria the hosting rights in recognition of the association’s efforts to develop the sport. He described the tournament as a significant milestone, noting that Nigeria would compete alongside India, Iran and Pakistan in the Zone E qualifiers. According to him, the hosting opportunity comes after more than two decades of polo development in the country.
Dikko said the commission’s support aligns with the Federal Government’s broader ambition to use sports as a driver of economic growth and international influence. He added that the event should be treated as a national undertaking rather than the responsibility of the polo association alone, pledging cooperation within the commission’s capacity to help deliver a successful championship.
