Commission Introduces Phone Verification Tool to Protect Buyers from Counterfeit Devices
Nigerian consumers can now check the regulatory status of mobile phones before purchasing them under a new initiative by the Nigerian Communications Commission aimed at curbing the circulation of fake and non-compliant devices. The platform is also intended to ensure that phones connected to local telecommunications networks meet established technical standards.

The commission’s Kano Zonal Controller, Maigana Gidado, announced the initiative during a media briefing on Thursday, explaining that the Device Checker platform would strengthen consumer protection and improve compliance across the telecommunications market. Buyers can access the service through the commission’s website at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker and enter a phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity number to verify its status.
To improve compliance, the regulator has also engaged importers, distributors and other industry players on equipment approval requirements, while simplifying licensing procedures for device dealers. Manufacturers and sellers have been directed to consult the commission’s Device Verification Guide for information on their regulatory responsibilities. The NCC said the platform was designed strictly for device identification and compliance checks, not surveillance, and cannot access users’ private information such as messages, photographs, contacts or financial records.
The commission has urged buyers to verify devices before completing purchases and to patronise reputable, licensed dealers. It said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote fair competition, protect consumers from substandard products and strengthen the reliability of Nigeria’s telecommunications networks. Consumers who need assistance or wish to lodge complaints can contact the commission through its toll-free line on 315.
