Ebola Outbreak Reaches Seventh Province as Cases Surpass 7,000
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has expanded to a seventh province, with health authorities reporting more than 7,000 cases and nearly 3,400 deaths in the country’s latest epidemic.
The outbreak, which was first detected in Ituri Province in May, has spread into other parts of the country, including South-Ubangi, which borders the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. The expansion has increased concerns over containing the virus across areas already affected by insecurity, limited state presence and weak healthcare infrastructure.
According to the latest figures, 7,022 cases have been recorded, with 3,398 deaths and 1,671 recoveries. Ituri remains the hardest-hit area, where the detection of Ebola among schoolchildren after the return to classes has heightened concerns about transmission within schools and surrounding communities.
Health authorities and schools have responded with preventive measures including mandatory handwashing, hygiene awareness and efforts to limit physical contact among pupils. However, the spread into additional provinces is putting further pressure on efforts to contain an outbreak that has already become the deadliest Ebola epidemic recorded in the DRC.
Ebola spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids and can cause severe illness, including organ failure and internal and external bleeding. The latest outbreak is unfolding in regions where insecurity and poor access to healthcare could make surveillance, treatment and rapid response more difficult.
