Anti-Drug Agency Intercepts UK Cannabis Shipments, Finds Opioids Hidden in Bread and Speakers
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted two consignments of synthetic cannabis, popularly known as Colorado or “Colos,” concealed in consolidated cargoes from the United Kingdom, as operatives also recovered illicit opioids hidden inside loaves of bread and music speakers.
The latest operations formed part of a wider crackdown that led to the seizure of about 2.3 tonnes of illicit drugs and the arrest of several suspected traffickers across eight states, according to reports.
NDLEA operatives intercepted the two UK-bound consignments of Colorado, while two additional consignments of the synthetic cannabis were discovered concealed inside music speakers at two motor parks in Lagos.
In another operation, officers uncovered opioids concealed inside loaves of bread, allegedly in an attempt to evade detection during transportation.
The agency also arrested several suspects linked to the trafficking networks, including a 70-year-old woman and a real estate agent, as investigations continued into the wider distribution chains.
The seizures come amid intensified efforts by the NDLEA to disrupt international and domestic drug trafficking networks. The agency has recently intercepted large quantities of cocaine, heroin, cannabis and pharmaceutical opioids at Nigerian ports, airports and other entry points.
NDLEA officials have repeatedly warned that traffickers are adopting increasingly sophisticated methods to conceal narcotics in legitimate goods and everyday household items, prompting the agency to strengthen intelligence-led operations and surveillance.
The latest arrests and seizures are expected to lead to further investigations aimed at identifying other members of the networks and tracing the sources and intended destinations of the drugs.
