ECOWAS Biometric Card Targets Easier Travel and Safer Cross-Border Trade
A new ECOWAS biometric identity card is expected to make movement across West African borders easier while improving identity checks and supporting cross-border economic activities.
The ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card, which costs N35,000 in Nigeria, is designed to support the regional free movement framework by providing citizens with a harmonised form of identification for travel across member states. Officials said the system could also help people exercise their rights to live and work within the region.
The International Organisation for Migration, ECOWAS and the Nigeria Immigration Service said the biometric system would strengthen border management while making it easier to identify legitimate travellers. They also linked the initiative to efforts to address irregular migration and cross-border crime without restricting lawful movement.
The agencies made the case for greater public awareness at a media sensitisation workshop in Lagos, stressing that the success of the card would depend partly on citizens understanding its purpose, eligibility requirements and use at border points. They said better identity systems could support regional trade, economic integration and safer movement as West Africans increasingly cross borders for business and other legitimate activities.
