Government Begins Reintegration Support for Nearly 1,900 Returnees From South Africa
The Ghanaian government has begun measures to support the reintegration he of citizens evacuated from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks that forced thousands of foreigners to seek safety.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government would assess the circumstances and needs of the returnees to determine the appropriate assistance required to help them rebuild their lives after returning home.
The latest development followed the arrival of the final batch of 41 Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa. With nearly 1,900 Ghanaians repatriated since May, authorities said the reintegration programme would include financial assistance, transportation support, medical services, psychosocial care and enrolment in the national health insurance scheme.
The government is also expected to provide continued employment support as part of efforts to help returnees regain economic stability. The evacuations followed attacks involving harassment, intimidation, assault, displacement and destruction of property belonging to foreign nationals in South Africa, affecting citizens from several African countries.
