Farmers Warn Insecurity Poses Major Threat to Agricultural Production
The Cocoa and Plantain Farmers Association of Nigeria (CPFAN) has raised concerns over the growing impact of insecurity on farming activities, warning that it could undermine efforts to achieve food security in the country.

The concern was expressed during a joint programme organised by the association in partnership with Green World Natural Solutions, aimed at promoting improved farming techniques and the use of modern agricultural inputs.
Leaders of the association noted that incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and attacks on farmlands have forced many farmers to abandon their agricultural activities, significantly reducing productivity in several regions.
They stressed that ensuring the safety of farmers is essential for increasing food production, urging government at all levels to strengthen security measures in rural communities and farming areas.
CPFAN also called for the deployment of security personnel, including forest guards, to areas where farming activities take place, particularly in forest zones that are often vulnerable to criminal activities.
Beyond security challenges, the association identified limited access to agricultural inputs and financing as key issues affecting farmers. It appealed for increased government support to address these constraints and improve overall productivity.
The group further recommended the establishment of targeted security initiatives in major farming areas, alongside improved infrastructure, enhanced monitoring systems, and community-based security approaches.
In a related development, the Ondo State Government highlighted ongoing efforts to support farmers and boost agricultural output. The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry disclosed that thousands of farmers are benefiting from a fertiliser distribution programme implemented in collaboration with the Federal Government.
He also noted plans to provide additional support to farmers operating in forest areas through partnerships with international organisations, while emphasising the importance of promoting agro-processing and value addition to strengthen the agricultural sector.
According to the commissioner, increased investment in agro-allied industries will help improve farmers’ incomes, create employment opportunities, and drive economic growth within the state.
CPFAN reiterated that sustained intervention and effective policies are necessary to protect farmers and ensure the long-term growth of the agricultural sector.
