Herders Petition Authorities Over Repeated Cattle Killings in Plateau

Cattle breeders in Plateau State have raised fresh concerns over repeated killings and alleged poisoning of livestock in parts of the state, prompting a formal petition to key security and government authorities.

Herders Petition Authorities Over Repeated Cattle Killings in Plateau

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in Plateau State submitted a petition to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Department of State Services, and Operation Enduring Peace over what it described as a series of attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas. The group says the incidents occurred within a short period in April and appear to follow a disturbing pattern.

According to the association, several cases were recorded between April 18 and April 23, involving cattle deaths and suspected poisoning in different villages. It says these incidents have caused serious losses for herders and created fear among pastoral families who rely on livestock for survival.

The group also expressed concern that despite reporting the matter to security agencies, there has been no clear arrest or visible progress in the investigation. It says this silence is increasing anxiety among affected communities.

In its petition, the association warned that the situation could have wider effects beyond economic losses, including strain on food supply and rising mistrust in already sensitive communities.

It called for urgent investigation, identification of those responsible, and steps to prevent further occurrences. At the same time, it urged its members to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions in the state.
