Dangote Refinery Expansion to Create 95,000 Jobs as Capacity Hits 1.4 Million Barrels per Day
The Dangote Refinery is set to undergo a major expansion that will significantly increase its production capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day, with plans expected to create about 95,000 skilled jobs at the peak of construction.

President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, made the announcement in Lagos during his induction as an Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering. He described the project as a key milestone in Nigeria’s industrial development and a major step toward strengthening local refining capacity.
According to him, the expansion reflects the company’s long term commitment to engineering excellence, industrial growth, and job creation. He explained that the project will rely heavily on skilled professionals including engineers, technicians, and artisans, with Nigerians expected to form a large part of the workforce.
Once completed, the expanded refinery is projected to become the largest in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India. This development is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products and improve energy security.
Beyond its industrial impact, the project is also expected to stimulate economic activity across multiple sectors, including construction, logistics, manufacturing, and services. Experts note that such a large scale project could create indirect employment opportunities and support local businesses within the supply chain.
The announcement also highlights ongoing efforts to deepen industrialisation in Nigeria through private sector investment. However, attention is likely to remain on how effectively the project translates into sustainable jobs and long term economic benefits for the country.
As construction begins to scale up, the expansion positions the refinery as a central player in Nigeria’s energy future and a major contributor to employment generation in the years ahead.
