King Charles Calls for Stronger AI Safeguards as Tech Leaders Debate Risks
King Charles has urged artificial intelligence companies to strengthen safeguards around increasingly powerful AI systems, warning that the technology could have catastrophic consequences if misused or placed in the wrong hands. He made the call at a meeting of technology leaders at Dumfries House in Scotland.
The summit brought together senior figures from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside Britain’s Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan and a Vatican adviser on AI. The discussions focused on developing common principles for the responsible development and use of advanced AI.
The meeting comes as concerns grow over the pace of AI development and whether existing safety measures are keeping up with increasingly capable systems. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang called for companies to delay products that are not sufficiently safe, while Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis said artificial general intelligence could be only a few years away.
Charles said AI development should remain focused on serving people, communities and the natural world. The discussions therefore placed greater attention on how technology companies, governments and researchers can manage the risks of advanced AI as its capabilities continue to expand.
