Trump Calls for New Ukrainian Leadership, Citing Stalled Peace Efforts
United States President Donald Trump has called for a change in Ukraine’s leadership, blaming President Volodymyr Zelensky for the continued failure to reach a peace agreement with Russia. Trump made the remarks at the White House on Saturday, arguing that Ukraine had missed several opportunities to negotiate an end to the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The US president’s criticism comes amid disagreements over Washington’s handling of Russian energy exports and Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. Trump recently backed a temporary suspension of sanctions on Russian diesel exports, while Zelensky warned that allowing Moscow to generate additional revenue from fuel sales could help finance its military campaign against Ukraine.
Trump also criticised Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries, arguing that disruptions to fuel production could affect international diesel supplies and increase costs for American farmers and ranchers. He maintained that Ukraine’s military operations should not undermine global energy markets, highlighting growing tensions between Washington’s economic priorities and Kyiv’s wartime strategy.
Despite Trump’s renewed criticism, the war continues without a lasting peace settlement, with Russian forces occupying parts of Ukrainian territory and Kyiv maintaining its resistance with support from Western allies. The US president’s demand for new Ukrainian leadership adds further pressure to an already difficult diplomatic process, as disagreements over military strategy, energy supplies and the terms of a potential settlement continue to complicate efforts to end the conflict.
