Mali Army Repels Attack on Central Base, Kills Over 50 Militants
Malian security forces have repelled a major pre-dawn assault on a military base in central Mali, killing more than 50 suspected militants in an operation that highlights the growing sophistication of jihadist attacks in the Sahel.
The attack on the 23rd Infantry Regiment base in San occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 9, with the assailants reportedly using heavy weapons, armed drones and two armoured vehicles. One of the vehicles was allegedly used to breach the base’s perimeter before troops mounted a coordinated response and regained control of the facility. The military also confirmed casualties among its personnel but did not disclose the number.
According to Mali’s armed forces, several attackers were wounded and taken away by retreating fighters, while troops launched search operations to track those who escaped. The assault was attributed to fighters linked to Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated group active across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
The attack highlights the continuing security challenges facing Mali despite intensified military operations against jihadist groups. The increasing use of drones, armoured vehicles and coordinated assaults on military installations points to an evolving threat as armed groups seek to challenge government control and expand their influence across parts of the Sahel.
