Nigerian Army Rescues 33 Kidnapped Passengers in Zamfara
Nigerian troops have rescued 33 passengers abducted by armed terrorists in Zamfara State after engaging their captors in a gun battle, the military and multiple Nigerian media outlets have reported.
The victims were rescued on Saturday, August 8, after troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, received intelligence that passengers travelling through the Magazu area of Tsafe Local Government Area had been abducted.
According to reports, troops moved to the area and engaged the kidnappers in a firefight. The pressure forced the armed men to abandon their captives and flee into nearby bushes. All 33 victims were recovered safely, while security forces launched a search operation to locate the fleeing attackers.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, according to reports. The rescued passengers were subsequently taken to safety for medical attention and further processing before being reunited with their families.
The rescue comes amid persistent attacks and mass abductions across Zamfara and other parts of north-western Nigeria, where armed criminal groups have exploited vast forest areas to carry out kidnappings, cattle raids and attacks on rural communities and travellers.
Zamfara has remained one of Nigeria’s major hotspots for kidnapping and armed violence, with security forces conducting sustained operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to disrupt criminal networks and rescue abducted civilians.
The latest operation represents another significant success for the military in its efforts to protect major transport routes and civilian populations in the region, although authorities continue to face the challenge of locating and dismantling the armed groups operating from remote forest areas.
The Nigerian Army has not indicated whether any of the kidnappers were killed or arrested during the operation.
