President Tinubu Urges Diaspora Doctors to Return and Support Nigeria’s Health Sector
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian medical professionals living abroad to return home and contribute to the ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system. The appeal was made during a meeting with a delegation of diaspora healthcare practitioners in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 National Diaspora Day.
The president emphasised the importance of harnessing the expertise, experience and innovation of Nigerian professionals overseas to improve healthcare delivery and build a more resilient system. He noted that the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda places significant focus on reforms aimed at expanding access to quality medical services, enhancing infrastructure and promoting collaboration with skilled Nigerians in the diaspora.
Tinubu highlighted ongoing plans to address longstanding challenges within the sector, including workforce shortages, limited infrastructure and gaps in specialised care. He explained that the administration is pursuing measures such as increased investment in medical training, research and digital health solutions, alongside policies designed to encourage the return of qualified professionals and reduce the impact of brain drain.
The president also acknowledged the contributions of diaspora doctors who have recently participated in medical outreach programmes across various parts of the country, providing specialised treatments, surgeries and health education to underserved communities. He encouraged them to deepen their engagement through partnerships, knowledge transfer and investment, while also motivating others abroad to reconnect with the country.
Officials present at the event reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Nigerians overseas, noting that such partnerships are essential to achieving sustainable improvements in the healthcare sector and advancing national development.
