Kano Government Plans State-Owned Airline to Boost Employment
The Kano State Government has announced plans to establish a state-owned commercial airline as part of efforts to expand opportunities in the aviation sector and provide jobs for locally trained pilots. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed the initiative during a recent Executive Council meeting in Kano, noting that the proposed airline is expected to commence operations within the next year.
According to the governor, the project is designed to absorb pilots who benefited from state-sponsored training programmes, while also strengthening the state’s participation in the aviation industry. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the necessary support and resources are provided to make the airline operational and sustainable.
The announcement followed recognition received by the governor from the Kano State Pilot Association for supporting members in completing their professional training. He expressed satisfaction with the performance of pilots trained abroad, particularly those who underwent aviation programmes in Jordan, and indicated that the government intends to build on previous investments by creating pathways for them to contribute to the state’s development.
Representatives of the pilot association commended the government’s continued backing, especially efforts that have helped members address licensing requirements. They also called for further assistance to enable pilots obtain full certification needed for commercial and international flight operations. The proposed airline is expected to enhance employment prospects for aviation professionals from the state while contributing to broader economic growth.
